Answer is yes, but only because you're running x64 now.

x64 doubles the registers allowing your system to access all that memory. However, this increases the size of the program, and reduces performance overall.

So you're getting doubly-screwed by running x64 instead of x86. It's really only worth it to do so when you have 6GB or more of RAM.

2gb of DDR2 800mhz provides around 6.4gb/s of bandwidth. You've 1066mhz which will offer around 8gb.

There's barely any applications, games included, that can make use of the full bandwidth provided by 2gb of 800mhz, so 4gb of 1066mhz is overkill.

is it fine now? are you experiencing troubles? if you aren't having RAM troubles, lagging, or lockups, then yeah it's fine. Would you benefit from the increased RAM? probably. It all depends on what you're doing. it's like video cards, would I benefit running an 8800gts? probably. Do I need it? not at all.

Once I get my new build sorted, I'll be ditching the raptors (and are for sale) as they don't really offer a speed increase for my needs compared to a large 500gb hdd. I'll also be attempting the tri-boot again, between XP Pro, Vista Ultimate (32/64) and Ubuntu.

Till then, I have more than enough on my mind
Slightly of the topic (with apologies for hijacking your tread Cew27) but as far as I'm aware off Gaz, the tri-boot with Vista and Ubuntu probably won't work. Vista is not using boot.ini anymore. I don't see how any Lilo or Grub bootloader will be able to work around that... I'm not really up to speed on the finer details and I could even be wrong about this but I think it might be worth starting a tread on that one so you could pick the brains of people with more knowledge about this than I have.

Besides, those 2x36Gb raptors the ones you wanted to sell off about a month ago? I thought they would have been gone by now. Once you come to sell them off, send me a pm. If the price is right I'll take them of you. I have got a use for two little drives like that.

Cheers
Chris.

Cheers. Yeah I know the original bootloader used by XP wouldn't be the one that would be in use, I was thinking more along the lines of having the Vista bootloader manage the boot process giving me the option of XP, Vista or Ubuntu.

Yeah those raptors are still the ones I've been shifting. I've kept the price high because I wasn't willing to sell them until I had shifted my cpu, mobo and ram, but now there sold i've been getting a lot of interest in the raptors at around £40 each.

Apologies cew27 for straying off-topic
