Hi

I have a 160 gb freecom external harddrive which i purchased a few months ago. Today, i have some how managed to drop the drive from my desk!!! When i lifted the drive back up i immediately heard a “swirling” type of noise from it. The noise stopped after a while.

I reconnected it after ten minutes and the lights turned on and the “swirling” noise began again. The drive is not recognised by vista although the lights and everything are on.

So, my question is have i COMPLETLEY ruined it and lost about 120gb worth of stuff or is there anything i can do to restore the information/get it to function?????

Hi if you have dropped the hard drive onto the floor from a foot or so you prob either damaged the read/write heads or even the actuator arm,
hopefully not the disks themselves
hopefully the data is okay which could be recovered, and how, i will leave that to those more experienced than me in these situations
but yeah its prob ruined

the noise its making doesnt sound good! i wouldnt try opening it yourself, because you will have to open the hard drive inside the case, which is not something id recommend! if its really important data, then professional data recovery might be a opition, but it costs!
