I have 2 DVD R/W drives in my machine (1 Sony and 1 NEC) both worked 2 days ago. Today both display appropriately in BIOS, Device Manager, Windows Explorer. When I put a DVD disc in the drive and it tries to register (in either Drive and regardless of disc type OEM or self burned) windows explorer changes the identify in the explorer tree from DVD +R/W to CD Drive and does not recognize the media. Driving me crazy. I tried to uninstall and have windows re-install the driver - no luck. I tried to re-install WIndows XP over the current version and the Drive picks up the System Disc but fails during the process with an error for some file it's trying to use for the setup. I tried a different cable and tried plugging into a different IDE controller - no luck. I'm at a lose and ready to go out and buy an external USB Drive.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

have you any way to test the drives? aka in another pc.. though i admit its unlikely that both have stopped working at once..

are both the drives set to master and slave properly? or cable select etc.

Sounds like upper/lower filters may have become corrupted in the registry.

Have a little read here .... this should help resolve it.
