Firstly, hard drive partitioning, what are the advantages of doing this? And why do i do it?

Secondly, i have an internal hard drive encased in an external enclosure. Now this stores all of my music and videos on, so it quite important to me. Now when i plug the usb cable from the HD to the laptop, then power on the enclosure, it fires up fine. It allows me to access all of the files on the HD no problem. Then when i attempt to place something off the drive i get a error message reading 'write failure'. The HD then disconnects itself from the laptop. So even though it is powered up and connected, i cannot access it.

Is there anyway of fixing this as i really want to retrieve the data from the HD as there is alot on there

Try doing a scandisk, it may fix any errors.
