Default 320gb hard drive only shows 120gb

i just ordered a 320 gb hard drive from newegg. its a sata drive. I work on computers for the local ballet company and the computer i am putting this in is a hp pavilion a1540n and for some reason the last guy who worked on the computer pulled the sata 1 connector out so i have the drive plugged in on the sata 2 port and its showing up in the windows install as only 130gb. only and in the hp bios it shows as the correct 320gb. What am i doing all wrong??

Update Windows XP to SP2.

How do you know he's not on SP2 at the moment? And why not upgrade to SP3?

That would indeed explain why then! Get SP3 though as this includes all fixes from updates after SP2 also.

Yea, could do, and it's out on auto updates now, so it's bug free (well as bug free as things get) but as you don't have the SP, I advise you to turn auto updates on, or atleast check for updates fairly oftern, otherwise you are leaving your computer more vulnerable to attacks.
