Hey Kieran.
External Hdd's in enclosures should not make a huge amount of noise if they're passively cooled by the enclosure itself. The usual drive noises should be muffled by the enclosure. Do you know whether or not your's has fan-assisted cooling? as that could be it. Could you describe what you're hearing to give us a better understanding. Thanks.

yeah it has its own cooling fan and is incased in aluminium which is why I domt really understand it. I fiddled with the screws around the fan and that helped but it is still giving off a low humb which sounds like its vibrating through my desk, this can be minimised by putting some fabric between the desk and the the HD but its not much of a solution and the fan itself is very loud....any ideas?

I wouldn't think there's much you can do to be frank (unless the unit is proven as faulty) because small fans, especially the low profile ones, do make a humming noise.
as for vibration, if you've got the drive positioned horizontally i would change it to vertically. This should alleviate it.
