I have an Alienware laptop and when I booted last night the HD was not there in the BIOS and it tried to use the second boot device. I entered BIOS and the hard drive was "Not Detected", however when I selected the primary master, it was suddenly there again, and asked me to reboot. I did, and the hard drive was still there, so I set it back to the first boot device, rebooted, and i got to that screen that says "Disk Read Error. Ctrl + Alt + Delete to reboot". When I reboot and go into the BIOS, the HD is not detected again and the process starts over.
I am currently trying out the alienware respawn disks, so i'll post again if that works, but in the meantime, does anyone know if this means my HD is simply dead, or if there are other approaches to this problem? Thanks in advance. |

Boot off a LiveCD and see what happens.

Yea i booted off the Alien Respawn CD and ran symantec ghost to try to do a system restore and it said SMART Command failure. So i tried disabling SMART and the HD wasn't detected in BIOS again. It randomly appears in the BIOS if I select the primary IDE master...but when put it back as primary boot device and reboot it says Disk Read Error, so I reboot again and its gone again. Looks like the HD is indeed dead.
Gonna toss a new one in and see if I can system restore to the new drive. If the new drive is a different size and brand will that mess up the system restore? |

The system restore is stored on your hard drive, if your HDD is dead, you aren't getting your stuff back without a 100% dust free room and a shed load of knowledge..
You can use your Alien Respawn disk though, no problems there. |

Yea i used the wrong terminology there. By system restore, i meant the respawn...which is from an image on a DVD alienware provided.
Today i bought a new HD for it, and rather than use the respawn image I simply started fresh, reinstalled XP and all drivers. All is well, and I'm gonna see how dead the old HD is by attempting some recovery utilities. Thank you for the responses, and I apologize for a relatively pointless thread. Feel free to delete it. :P |
