on my pc the hard disk drive is a 80GB and every time i delete stuff off it it never seems to show the memory going back up as i am at the stage of 74.5GB and if i delete programmes, audio, pics, ect the figure stays the same.

any ideas?

Try emptying the recycle bin.

Also, try using a program called CCleaner. You can download it from our downloads section. It will clean all the junk off your computer.

i also have an 80gb harddrive maxtor one iv got that exact thing goin on...i did find tho that runing
secure clean4 it went back up loadz...there is loadz of diffrent programs on the net for free that can do this but after trying loadz this one workd best as others mist delited files ect.the program re writes over delited things on the harddrive as you probably no when u delite something it actelly stays on ur harddrive..just hides it.....this program re writes over it taken less space..others on here can explain in more detail but it works for me :)

do be carefull tho as once a delited file has been writen over it CANNOT be recoverd

If you have used 74.5GB of an 80gb HDD, you are pretty close to full. It's possible that you are already using space that would otherwise be used as your pagefile.sys file (virtual memory) and when you delete some files the system is claiming it back. XP reserves 2.5 times the size of RAM by default.
System Restore will claim space too .... i.e. if you switch off System Restore all the restore points are deleted, freeing up space. If you switch it back on, it will create restore points again on a daily basis ..... upto the default size.
I believe System Restore is suspended, when there is less than 200mb left and resumes when the figure exceeds 200mb.
Normally System Restore will claim 12% of your Drive, however the earliest restore points will get purged, when the drive starts getting full.

I had the same problem, my 200gb drive was showing I'd used around 170gb when in actual fact i'd used 90gb. Can't remember how I fixed it, i'll google it and find out for you, but I think I just ran chkdsk in cmd and then 'my computer' recognised it as the correct space.
