Default Attaching Slave Drive Problem!?

Hey everyone...

I am reformatting my Hard Disk soon and am trying to attach a 40GB IDE Drive to transfer my important data across to it. I will then later attach this drive to my computer (after my original one has been formatted) to return my documents back onto it.

However my Computer starts crashing when this drive is attached.
I have a Master SATA 120GB HDD (Getting Re-formatted) which has windows XP OS on it.
It is shown as Third IDE Master in the BIOS and is set to Native Mode.

When trying to attach my 40GB IDE Drive i set the jumper to slave on the drive and in the BIOS it is shown as Primary IDE Slave.

Then when i boot up my computer it crashes just after logon and the HDD Light stays lit continuously...
The only thing i can do is restart.

If I set the jumper to cable select it crashes just after POST
If I set the jumper to master it crashes after POST too.

Can anyone help I wish it would just work...
Much appreciated

Rechech the boot drive sequence in bios, to make sure the PC is not trying to boot with the 40gb drive

Have you tried removing Jumper from your IDE 40gb Hard disk, If not first try this remove jumper completely from IDE hard disk and attach it, Because when you attach a hard disk with out jumper computer automatically considers it as slave drive. Try this I think this might work.

Regards.
