Having just recovered from my 5th hard drive failure in as many years and the 3rd Maxtor failure, I thought I'd find out if anybody else was having problems with that particular brand or if it's just me?

You would have thought I'd know better by now, but their cost and relatively quiet operation make them an appealing choice, though now that I've lost the vast majority of my 250GB drive I'm looking elsewhere for a replacement.

Are they unreliable or am I just unlucky when it comes to drives?

I have 700gb's worth of Maxtor hard drives, I have had no problems they work like a treat here. I have had them for about a year.
How long have you had yours as they might of ran out of life?

I'm sure I've posed to this one before. I use maxtors now as my others Western Digital and Seagate failed too many times none lasted longer than 18 months. These maxtors have lasted 2 years. Did you buy the top of the range drives and did you have good case cooling.

The drives are less than a year old, if it wasn't for the fact I hammer them day in day out I would have attempted to get some form of compensation under the default 12 month manufacturers warranty.

In the past I have had older drives go, maybe around the 2-3 year mark which is more understandable, though this time I'm a little annoyed that I've lost one in just 10 months.

The drives are mid-level and certainly weren't the cheapest, and my ambient case temperature is 36 degrees. The drives were spaced out and I've got 5 case fans providing adequate airflow, so I'm at a loss as to why it went.

Have you got the dives in stripped mode I had two Maxtor drives runing as one drive and it was'nt stable at all I ended up taking one out and reinstalling the OS on just one drive and all was well. I can't remember if I used the one I took out again.

I've had several Maxtors fail on me over the past 6 months or so. I have them adequately cooled as far as I can tell, but they run exceptionally hot. The Maxtors I have are SATA ones, two from their 'top of the line' range, one slightly more budget model. (I can't remember the exact models and I'm on the laptop at the moment so can't check.)

It sounds like there has been a problem with their drives - have they been good about replacing them for you?

I had a Maxtor external drive. Died about a week after the warranty expired. I'm going to try using the Maxtor drive on another computer, but can't say when.

Have a great day. Stay safe, and may G-d bless. I wish you His peace.

I will never buy another Maxtor drive after having so many fail on me.

Only use Western Digital now and so far so good.
