I have a Seagate Baracuda HD in SATA 1 port of a KN9 SLI motherboard running Windows XP. There are no other drives in the system. Windows boots up, but when I go to My Computer, the only drive that shows up is E:. There is no C: drive. When I try to install a new program, it will not install on C:, because it cannot find the drive. Some programs run OK, but others don't because they look for things on C:. I have tried to change the drive letter in the registry, and then Windows won't boot. If I re-install Windows, it again only shows drive E:.

Anybody know how I can get this machine to show the boot drive as C:?

Thanks,

Change the drive letter in disk manager.

To start Disk Management: 1.Log on as administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
2.Click Start, click Run, type compmgmt.msc, and then click OK.
3.In the console tree, click Disk Management. The Disk Management window appears.

Dave,

I can't change the drive letter in Disk Manager because it sees the drive as the boot drive. Changing the drive letter in the registry causes Windows to not boot up.

See if this helps, but beware there is a risk.

Yes, that helps & I finally got it fixed. In case it might help someone in the future, here's what I did:
1. Went in the registry and changed drive C: to F:. Then changed E: to C: and changed f: (the old C:) to E:.
2. When I tried to reboot, it wouldn't go into windows.
3. Re-installed Windopws XP. After reinstallation, the drive is still shown as E:
4. Put in a USB flash drive and the flash drive came up as C:.
5. Went into drive manager and changed C: to F:.
6 Checked the registry, and there was no C: drive shown. I changed E: to C:.
7. On reboot it wouldn't go into windows.
8. Reinstalled Windows, and this time the boot drive was shown as C: and there is no E: drive - FINALLY!

Strange beasts these computers be.

Thanks for all the help Guys.
