I have been given a cd-r disk with numerous word/rtf files on it and I added two pdf documents to this disk using Nero express 5.5. To my horror, after completion of the task, only the two pdf files appear to be on the disk. I didn't think it was possible to erase or overwrite files on a cd-r disk and maybe the files are still there but I cant see them. Is there a way to retrieve these files?

You can't Retrieve those file if your CD is read Only since because there is two types of CD Disk available in the Market are known as 1. CD R ( Read Only)

2. CD R/W (Read and Write) you can read and write and also erase data on to this Disk.

If the CDR was created in Nero, using "Multisession", then it is possible to add files to the disk and delete files.

If you have deleted files you wont get the space back.

I didn't think you could overwrite or erase with a cd-r, unlike a cd-rw. Not sure what burning software was originally used so looks like its all gone for good.

Yes you can if Nero Multisession was used ......... you can add files with new sessions and delete existing files. If you delete files, you dont get the space back though.

Many thanks for the info, too late to read the instructions now! The irritating thing is that it didn't warn me about the deletion, it just did it - I suppose because I didn't select new session. Perhaps its not too late to read the instructions - for next time!

Thanks again.

It is possible the files are still there but you can't see them. As someone already said, if you are using NERO you could try to reopen a closed session

Yes, I was wondering that also, but unfortunately my copy of Nero which came with the disk drive is only nero express and I don't think it works properly with multisessions, there don't seem to be all the facilities described in the included manual. So I looked around for some undelete software for cd-r's and found one which did the trick and there were the files, as you say in previous sessions. Many thanks for help.
