!Hey hows it going, Im having a bit of an issue with my lite on dvd/cd-r drive. When I put in a cd the thing reads it but in the my computer screen the d: drive doesn't show a disc. If it helps this started a couple days ago when i canceled a cd burn mid umm... burn session? Also another thing is I installed multiple cd burn software apps on my computer I dont know if that would impact anything. As far as the trouble shooting I powered the comp off/on i tried to restore to an earlier point to see if it was a s/w issue, I updated drivers I also verified that the registry had 2 set as value ( 2=cr/rw ) none of these have worked. Any advice? should i just by a new drive? and how would i install if it my current drive be cannot read the s/w cd that would come w/ the new hardware? also woukd i need to install drivers if i purchased an external drive

I think this sometimes happens when the registry gets in a muddle.

Could try un-installing the drive in Device manager, then reboot and it should auto-install itself.

Thanks for the advice but i tried that 3 or 4 times and it didnt resolve the issue. Ive been working on this for the past 4 days Ive tried everything I could think of and nothing seems to work. I thin k im better off buying a new drive. Would I need a working cd drive to install an external dvd burner??

Try going to Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers right click the channel where the drive is located and click on "Uninstall" .... then reboot the PC.
This will force Windows to reinstall the IDE Controller and any drive(s) located on that channel.

If it's a glitch or corruption in Windows, this may flush it out.

<Above assumes this is not a SATA Drive>

Again thanks for the advice but that didnt work, I thought i was getting somewhere when I restarted and it said windows needs to reboot to finish hardware instalation.......I put a cd in and nothing. You all dont think that it has anything to do with stopping a cd burn mid session??

You mentioned that you installed additional Burning software, prior to this happenning ........
sometimes burning software can cause issues, especially some that have options to mount drives.
Also it is not a good idea to have more than one burning program installed at any one time.

It could be a problem with your Registry, but before going down that road .... if you have a bootable CD or DVD (e.g. a Windows Installation Disk), see if you can boot with it.
If you can then the drive itself, is not faulty and we will need to look further into why Windows is having issues.

I dont have a bootable cd so I cant check that, and as far as the registry goes what is it there that i need to check on?

OK .... this problem can occur if the upper/lower filter drivers become damaged.
If this is the case, you need to edit your registry settings, as described here.

Having said that, there are a few other things you could try, before editing the registry.

1. remove the drive and try it in another PC.

2. boot into safe mode and see if it works.

This will help to determine whether it's a faulty drive or corrupted registry.

Also .... if you go ahead with the registry fix, make sure you back up the registry first.
