I have a HP DV9000 laptop that is about a year and 1/2 old. it has a cD/DVD lightscribe on it and up until the other day worked fine. We first noticed the problem when we tried to lightscribe a disk and it didn't recognize the disc in the tray but after several attempts it finally did but when it finished it was very faint. next attempt was the same. third attempt it wouldn't even recognize the cd. I bought a disc cleaner but when you click on the E drive it says there is nothing in there. if i put a cd in it of music, it says the drive is empty, if i put a movie in the drive it says the drive is empty and won't play it. I reinstalled the drive, I downloaded drivers. I even did PC recovery (to which i forgot i had pictures, and some other momentos i would have liked to have kept but lost completely in that recovery) but that didn't work either. When you run diagnostic, it says this drive is working fine, Tried several other checks and they all say that drive is working just perfect but it won't recognize nothing or play nothing. When you put a CD in you can hear it make a noise and then stop. is my drive broken or just in need of something else? I hate to replace that drive for two reasons, one if it's not broke, i don't really want to go to the expense of replacing it and two, I haven't a clue how you even replace a DVD/cd rom drive on a laptop so any advice is greatly appreciated on this. THANKS!

Sounds faulty, a replacement would probably sort the problem.

Are they hard to replace? never done anything like that before? wouldn't the diagnostic scan have told me the cd rom drive was faulty when i ran it or wouldn't there be a yellow explanation mark on it or something in the device management section warning something was wrong? thanks

Laptop CD drives normally slide out from their slot very easily.

On the base of the laptop there should be a button or slider to release the drive from it's slot.
