Here's the scenario.

CD-ROMand DVD is detected by the POST and BIOS, but when booted up to winxp, the cd-rom and DVD drive cannot be seen from My Computer, Device Manager, Manage Compter, etc.. it's as if the entire drive is gone. Checked, unplugged and plugged the cd-rom drive from the mobo. When booted in safe mode, the cd-rom drive still does not appear in my computer, device manager, manage computer, etc..
I have an instalation disc but am not sure how to use this to repair any issues

To make things short:

When booted in Bios Mode CD-ROM and DVD Appears
When booted Normally: CD-ROM disappears.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.Dave

This is usually caused by a Registry corruption. Try this :

Go to Start/Run, type in Regedit and hit Enter

1. Remove the Upperfilters and Lowerfilters values completely from the following registry key (Windows XP):

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

2. Now reboot the system.

Make sure you only alter this line and do not inadvertantly change anything else, whilst in the Registry editor.

Thanks for your reply have done this and can see two entries under the registery key but still can't see them anywhere on the system.Have searched Microsoft for any fix's for this but cannot find anything. I have only re-installed windows yesterday.
Went to get a trial version of office 2007 from Microsoft or what I thought was Microsoft. something turned off Zone Alarm when I noticed I quickly put it back on. then found I had no drives. I have run spyware avg etc so basicaly I think I'll have to re-instal

No just removed the filters, just as a point I have looked at my other computer and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} the menus after the + are different and the info contained in them are different should I copy over these values into the registry that is corrupted don't see how this would harm as it's broke anyway let me know please
