i recently downloaded itunes to allow me to add music to my ipod. after a few weeks the cd/dvd drive had disappeared. carried out a search and found a solution on the microsoft website which allowed me to download a fix. this worked perfect but after a few weeks it happend again. tried to us the fix again but said that the settings was ok. carried out a futher search and got a suggestion to delete upper filters and lower filters from the reg key for the drive - when i went to do this there was no upper or lower filters, even gone to the device manager but it does not even appear there. please can you help.

Hi scopa.....i basically have the very same problem AND gone down the exact same road as yourself regarding the upper and lower filters, only to also find they were non existant.
I even did two factory restores in recent weeks, which temporarily rectified the issues, before the same thing happened.
Call me cynical, am starting to think its something to do with windows update, its a good way for them to generate a little business, as they tried to charge me £40 to fix this problem a few weeks back, telling me it would take about 45 mins to fix! Thing was, i managaed to fix it myself on that occasion

To be honest....i dont know. I ran a registry fix program and after that, the DVD Rom seemed to reappear in Device Manager....so i uninstalled it...rebooted and it worked.
There has to be something causing this...as i have done factory restores twice...in the last few weeks, and the DVD Rom was showing on both occasions. But something keeps causing it to vanish off my system altogether.

Scopa....my DVD Rom has mysteriously reappeared. What i just tried was putting a disc in the drive and clicked on add hardare from Control Panel and there it was. Am not saying that is the solution, but maybe give it a try. So...Stick Disc in and click on Add Hardware. See if that works

gman, thanks for that i will give it a try and let you know what happens over the next few days. did think about going back to factory settings but i have got things on the laptop which i have not backed up and don't want to lose them. the last time it happend i took it to a local computer shop and they charged me £70 to put it back to factory settings. i think i got robbed.
