Default CD / DVD drive not recognised in explorer

The CD / DVD drive on my Acer 5633 laptop is not shown up in explorer. The drive funtions in as much that you can open and close the door, the light comes on and it soulds as if the disc is running up - and then it stops. I've checked to see if I can see the drive in explorer and it is not shown there however the unit is recognised in the device manager - and says the device is working properly. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device - which worked fine except i still can't see it in explorer.
Any application which accesses the CD / DVD drive says there is not one availble - i.e. media player.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Keith

Go to Device Manager/ IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand the selection and right click on the channel where the drive is located and click Uninstall.
Then reboot the system. Windows will redetect and install the IDE Controller and any drive(s) that are on it. If there's a Windows glitch/corruption, this will often flush it out.

If this doesn't work, the chances are your drive has died .

Thanks for the advice Phil.
I'll try that later tonight. I have already uninstalled the CD/DVD drive from device manager and rebooted windows - it did redetect the drive and reinstalled it but the end result was the same. I'll try the same with the IDE / ATA/ATAPI controller and let you know.
