Default cd/ dvd re writer is pretty dead

ok, it might be my bios as i messed with them ages ago whilst trying to fix something else, but basically the computer doesnt think it has a cd drive when it does and the cd tray wont open if i press the button. it used to work untill i messed with the bios and i dont want to mess anything else up so what would it be under and also if i do happen to mess up and the system wont reboot how do i resolve it?

any help much apreciated
