All of a sudden, (note: I just bought and hooked up a removable external hard drive today) my DVD/CD-Rom drive is not reading anything. The light comes on, and the disc spins, but there is no DVD/CD-Rom drive listed under My Computer, nothing autoruns, and I can't select that drive...it's like it doesn't exist anymore.

Does anyone know what I can do to get my DVD/CD-Rom to be recognized and running again?

If the drive shows up on your bios try this

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

It doesn't show up anywhere at all. Meaning, under My Computer, etc. It's like it's not connected, but it is. The light works, it whirs and everything, and I made sure no cables are unplugged. Help! :/

Sounds like the drive could be knackered then, if your bios settings are correct then that is the only other solution, buy a new drive they are cheap enough, get a dvd-rw for around £20

Well the chances are if you don't know what the bios is you will have not changed any of the settings, so it is windows that has lost the drive. If you go through the procedure I have stated in a previous post in this thread it will correct your drive problem.

Thank you soooo much! Seriously, I thought I was going to have to buy a new ROM drive, but I rebooted after doing what you said, and voila! Insta-perfection.
