My 2-yr old emachine can no longer see my CD-ROM drive. One day it worked, the next day it didn't. I had it checked out and was told that the drive itself is OK. A friend mentioned that it might be the "IDE Controller". Does that sound right, and if so, how do I go about fixing it?

First of all - open up the computer and make sure the cables are all plugged in properly... i had the same problem as you. My cable came out so it is worth a try.

Also check that all your drivers or working

Go to Device Manager/IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, expand the selection and right click on the channel, where the drive is located and select uninstall. Then reboot the PC
Windows will automatically detect and reinstall the IDE Controller and any drive(s) that are present.
If the IDE Controller has become corrupted, this may well sort it out.
