Default Computer only half recognizes removable USB devices?

I don't know much about computers, and I will try to be thorough, but if you need any other information to help me, you need to only ask.

I'm running Windows XP professional.

My problem is that whenever I plug a removable USB device into my computer (So far I've tried two different MP3 players and a flash drive), it recognizes that they are there (The "found new hardware" and "safely remove hardware" icons both pop up), however, when I try to put files onto them by opening my computer and opening the drive, they are not there.

I know it's not faulty USB ports, my mouse is connected to one and it works fine. My webcam usually goes where I've been trying to plug the devices into, and it works fine. Also, when I plug MP3 players into the drive, they charge their batteries, when I plug in my flash drive the lights turn on, etc.

Any help would be appreciated very, very much!

Right click "My Computer" and select Manage. In the Device Manager, check and report back what changes when you plug in one of these devices. Any yellow "!"s? Any duplicated devices?

You are right that USB is hit and miss, especially via USB hubs.

Also .... if you are using ports on the front or side of the PC, try using the rear ports instead. These are straight off the motherboard (no headers or cables in between) and are often more reliable.

I haven't encountered a single problem using front USB ports.
