Hi,

I have a Maxtor 2.5" external hard drive and it has been functioning well for over 14 months now. All of a sudden my computer has stopped recognising it.

The only thing I remember doing differently over the past few weeks is I don't connect both cables to the USB (since I hv only 3 slots and 2 are taken up by my internet connection). I am also guilty of unplugging it without safely removing it on some occassions.

I have tried to connect it in all the slots but it doesn't recognise.
The hard drive lights up but doesn't flicker...it has also started making a weird beep sound.

I tried using a cable that came with my mp3 player but has only one usb connection end but it still fails to recognise it.

I am beyond worried at this point since it has a lot of important data and not to mention photos which do not have a back up (even if I can overlook the movies/music).

Is there anything I can do to restore it?

Please help!

Pull it out of the enclosure and hook it up internally to rule out failure of the enclosure.

Otherwise you have a dead hard drive, that's why you keep backups.

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I am actually volunteering in Kenya at the moment and wondering if I hv to tamper with it myself considering Im a novice. Guess Im better off taking it back and having someone look into it? Is there no way to restore data if its dead?

Not unless you have a lot of money. The enclosure part shouldn't be very difficult to do though if you have a screwdriver.
