Default Corrupted Data?

Hi,

I was defragmenting my external hard drive with Defraggler, when a message from Windows popped up saying that there was something corrupted. The defrag stopped, and I couldn't access the drive. So I turned it off (my external hd has a on/off power button) because safely remove didnt work. Then I turned it on again, and thankfully, there was no data loss. I don't know why something like this would happen, I usually safely remove my drive... Other stuff I was doing, on the internet, and converting videos.

What was the exact error message ? .... without that, it's not really gonna be possible to determine the reason.

Try running chkdsk on the drive and see what it shows.

It may take longer, but chdsk /r will deal with any errors found, providing it's not a hardware issue.

If this has only happened the once and it happened whilst converting video files, it could just be a fluke, brought about by memory intensive tasks.
I would keep an eye on it and consider backing up anything crucial, just to be on the safe side.

Any reason why the drive is FAT32 ? .... this format is not as robust as NTFS.

Ok, I will do a backup when I find time. The drive came as FAT32, and I didn't notice when I got it, so now it's got stuff, so changing to NTFS means formatting right? and that means erasing the stuff.

No ... you can convert it, see here for how

Having said that, in view of the issue with this drive, I would suggest the back up first
