I had a prior problem, here- http://www.computer-juice.com/forums...g-funny-21104/ and then out of frustration proceeded to slam my laptop closed! HARD! Duh! Then, when I rebooted I received a BSOD telling me "fatal error 0x00000006". It eventually rebooted and gave me this message after POST: "a disk read error has occured" "Press Ctrl alt del to reboot". I could not get into Advanced startup, only BIOS Setup. So, I figured I damaged my MBR or HDD.

Yesterday, I removed and reinstalled the HDD, set BIOS to boot from DVD, went into recovery console and ran fixboot. After each step I rebooted and nothing changed, still getting the disk error message.

I'm now in the process of running chkdsk /r. The chkdsk /r command is taking a long time. It checked the volume quickly, 100GB HDD, but it's been "performing additional checking or recovery...: since 1 or 2 pm and it's now at 61% complete at 7:45pm. At this rate it will take chkdsk 30+ hours to "perform additional checking or recovery....."

I have a strong feeling my hdd may be trashed now. I feel real stupid for slamming the lid closed, but am wondering if you or someone else here may be able to help me determine if the HDD is trashed or how to fix the system if not. I could start another thread if that would be better. All my googling has led me to believe the HDD or MBR is trashed. Anyway, I appreciate your help.

BTW! Today chkdsk is still running and says it's 50% complete.

Update:

chkdsk /r finally finished this morning and said "found and repaired one or more errors on the disk".

Upon reboot I now get the following message on a black screen.
SMART failure predicted on hard disk 0
Warning: Immediately back up data and replace HDD. A failure may be eminent.
Press F1 to continue

When the system reboots I get that message and upon pressing F1 it reboots again and the Windows error screen comes up and allows for the following advanced startup options, none of which work. Safe mode, Safe mode w' networking, safe mode w' command prompt, LKGC or normal startup.

I first tried LKGC w' no luck, I figured that much. Then I tried safe mode and a long list of multi(0)disk(0)part(1)windows/system32/ etc.etc lines came up always hanging at multi(0)disk(0)part(1)windows/system32/TDI.SYS. Then I would get the safe mode wording bordering my screen as if it were entering safe mode but it never would make it, instead it would BSOD quickly enough that I couldn't read the error message and reboot to the SMART warning screen. Endless cycle!

I can get into Recovery console using the XP setup/ install disk and it appears nothing else???

Is there a way for me to back up my data on this drive without being able to boot into Windows?

Get a LiveCD. Read this guide, it's a bit old, but more or less, it's still the same.

You should be able to use Ubuntu just as well as Knoppix, but if it doesn't recognise that anything is on the hard drive, well, you're in trouble.
