Hi all,
I have a PC running XP pro, with a DVD+RW (Sony DRU120A). When I insert a DVD+RW blank disk, to try to copy a video recording to it, the only reference I can get is to a CD being in the drive not a DVD.
I have tried this with Real Player and Windows Player, both with the same results.

Any ideas what the problem might be please?

It wouldn't surprise me if this was due to buggy firmware, unfortunately Sony's are known for it.

Try downloading the latest firmware for the device and let us know.

Hi Alex, Thanks for your interest. I have just done as suggested and there is no difference. I put a DVD blank in and was asked what I wanted to do with the CD in drive D.

Okey doke, it was worth a try at least.

I hate to ask, but are you absolutely sure it's a DVD disc your inserting? no insult intended fella, its just something we need to troubleshoot.

Also, please try another disc of the same brand, and a different brand (if you already havn't).

Come back to us after that.

Have you actually tried burning a DVD or watching one?

Who cares if it thinks its a CD, if it still plays or burns it. ;)

For burning use something decent like Nero.

I kinda agree, but if it works, whats the problem.

Dave (w) did the drive come with any sony software to help with burning etc? (similar usage to nero etc).

If so, do me a favour and delete the software completely, and try the disc using Nero.
I realise you already have but this was with the sony stuff still installed.

Who says it's going to though?

Let's say he inserts the disc, and it's read as a cd. Typical cdr's or cdrw's have a 700mb capacity. He trys to copy a gig of data, and it potentially won't let him do it all on the dvd disc he's inserted. Big waste of space, or he'll have to start the process again for the data that wasn't copied the first time, which is a waste of time.

I meant that windows says its a CD but when he loads a burning program it recognises it properly, then there isn't really a problem.

As per his first post though, he tried realplayer and got the same result, i realise that isn't what your saying but it does show a problem. Unless he tries a burning program and wants to go the route you're suggesting fella (hence my comment on Nero) we won't know for sure.

I just like things working 100% or they can (and do) usually lead to further issues in p.c's.

I agree completely mate, it isn't right.

But fixing problems across a forum isn't always about getting things perfect, its about making things work.

I just thought that this wasn't actually a big issue if it works, even though not as intended, but as always a job done well is a job done properly. :)
