Default DVD Drive does not read disks anymore

I just got the computer a couple months ago and its been working great tell now. But for some reason now the drive won't read any disks anymore. No idea why, I want to see if there is a quick fix before I reformatting.

Does the drive show up in your BIOS, device manager and My Computer?

Yea, In My Computer It shows up as a DVD-RAM drive. Would that have anything to do with it?

If it shows in My Computer it's installed.

You could try deleting it in device manager, reboot, then it will install itself again.

Failing that I would say it's faulty.

No luck. I'll try reformatting. Maybe that will work. Any idea why it shows up as a DVD-RAM drive? I thought it was supposed to be a DVD-ROM drive.

Out of interest, did you install Daemon Tools or any other Drive Mounting software, before this happened ?

Also I forgot to mention, I can't even hear the drive spin the disk anymore. The drive still shows up on My Computer and in the BIOS but every time I put in a disk it is as if i didn't put in a disk in the first place. I'm thinking of getting a new dvd drive but I don't want to spend the money unless I know it is unfixable.

If the drive can read DVD-Ram, it tends to show up as DVD-Ram (basically a pointless floppy)
You could try booting from a disc, if that works... well, reformatting could fix the issue.
Did you mess up a firmware update? (like the PC crashed during, etc)

No, I don't understand it. I haven't done anything with this computer except play games and a little bit of internet stuff(no bittorrant or anything like that).
