Hi
can somebody please help me as i have become lost over this problem.
1. I had recently installed windows vista ultimate + sp1 on my sata hard drive, about a week later my dvd writer Lite-on shm-165p6s02c stopped working, (drive shows up on my computer and device manager) so i had a look to see if i could remove the upper and lower filters but there isnt any.
2. also i have a cd rom and cdrw drive, the same thing happens when i install these they both appear om my computer device manager, the only difference from the three drives is the cd rom drive soon as put a cd in my computer just freezes and needs to be switched off at the plug( p.s installed all three individually) the other two drives do nothing with a cd or dvd but comp doesnt crash
3. tried two ide cables still not working, if i have a cd/dvd in the dvd drive i can explore the drive but just shows as if no cd in drive, i have also tried a pci ide ata controller with all three but same thing.
4. finally used a seperate program to format my hard drive and then installed xp using the cd rom drive which now crashes the computer as i metioned before, so it worked to install xp but soon as installed same probs with all three drives please is there anyone who can give me an idea what to do will be amazed if any one can help me thanks

A little checklist :

Make sure all the IDE drives (both hard drives and optical) are jumpered correctly (Master or Slave).

Make sure the IDE cables and power cables are securely connected to the drives.

Make sure the IDE channels (both Primary and Secondary) are set to Auto/Auto Detect in the BIOS.

Go to Device Manager and Uninstall both the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers for Primary & Secondary then reboot the system.
Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE Controllers amd redetect & reinstall all the drives.
If there's a Windows glitch, this will normally flush it out.

hi i done the bios update already had latest version but done it anyway still nothing have noticed that under device manager my computer shows the ide ports as

primaryidechannel
primaryidechannel
secondaryidechannel
secondaryidechannel
Standarddualchannelpci ide controller
standarddualchannelpci ide controller

Is this the normal layout in device manager
(my pci ata/ide controller is listed under scsi/raid devices)

i did try to set up a raid system with another hard drive but it was faulty. just guessing now as i said lost

p.s sorry i have tried uninstalling both the ide channels and still nothing thanks

Yep .... mine looks pretty similar to that.

Whilst troubleshooting, it might be a good idea to remove the PCI IDE Card, just in cas this is conflicting.

Also, have you installled any software, which includes Virtual Drives, such as Daemon Tools or Alcohol120 ?

Are you sure you uninstalled the correct IDE Channel .... i.e. the one where the CDROM/DVDROM Drive(s) are fitted ? ...... if unsure right click each channel and select Properties and click the Advanced tab .... you are looking for Atapi cdrom

Also this seems to happen after iTunes is installed ..... could this be a factor too ?
