Default DVD drivers won't power up when connected to mobo

i have recently upgraded my computer to an Asus P5KC mobo with Intel Quad core processor. I have never built a PC myself and have had my first attempt. Everything works ok except for the DVD drives. I have connected them to the only IDE connectors on the board but for some reason when they are connected they don't power up and are not recognised. However, if i don't plug them in with IDE they power up but obviously still aren't recognised. My hard drives are connected to SATA so there should be no conflict here. The jumpers are set to master and slave so that shouldn't be the problem. Can anyone help me?

have tried another cable but still doesn't work. the dvd drives were working fine with my old system so it would be strange if they both broke at the same time. maybe for some reason it isn't compatible with my new motherboard? thanks for the help

You should check your bios, maybe it is deactivated in there somewhere

Connect the drives as normal and go to Device Manager and uninstall the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controller, then reboot. Windows will automatically reinstall the IDE Controller and redetect and install the drive(s).

If there's a Windows glitch, this may flush it out.

I can eject the drives when the ide cable is not connected but when they are connected there is simply no power present to the drives. i cannot open them, read from them and they are not recognised. I have checked BIOS settings and it recognises one Atapi CD ROM in the boot up screen but i assume that this is a default as no IDE connections are recognised throughout the system. I may just have to upgrade to a newer drive which can be connected to SATA.

it might well be your psu. if theres not rnough power to power everything in the motherboard then your going to need a new one. i doubt it will be but its always a possibility.

my psu is 500w and so should be fine for my system but I suppose that is always a possibility. i find it very strange that this has happened, maybe it is a windows glitch, power supply or mobo problem. either way, it's not a huge problem as I can always buy a new drive quite cheaply and connect it to SATA. thanks a lot for all of your help

No they don't open on boot up either. But surely if it's a PSU problem they wouldn't open up when the ide cable isn't connected either? or does the PSU control power in relation to what the mobo has running off it? if so then I can always upgrade to a more powerful PSU. What kind of power would you recommend for my system?

Intel Quad Q6600
Asus P5KC mobo
2 DVD drives
EAX1050 graphics
Geil 2 x 1 GB DDR2 800 Mhz Ram
Arctic Cooler Freezer 7 Pro
2 Sata HDD

Thanks again for your help

Have you tried 1 drive set as master on 1 port on the end connector. if it works connect the other set as slave on the other connector.
