Default DVD Writer help please!!

Just like to say hi to all, and yes i'm very slow around computers, so please help!!!

I've just brought my son a external dvd writer so he can burn his movies which he has down loaded, installed nero for him, which was easy enough, burned a movie for him which was fine, but no dvd player in the house will read it????

What do i do?
I'm using Datawrite DVD-R which says enhanced for data, video and console which says general purpose.

many thanks
karen

please note i'm very new to all this, and have not got a clue, lol

The DVD player needs to be one that is made to read DVD-R discs.

Also if you are downloading the films they need to be converted, but downloading films is illegal so you can't discuss that here.
