Default External drive file transfer

Hi there,

I'm trying to move roughly 300GB of data from one external drive to another, both connected via usb to a pc running Vista with 2GB of ram. But, I keep getting "There is not enough memory to complete the operation" about halfway through and have to stop.

Surely 2GB of memory is enough to handle transferring that amount without problem or am I missing something?

Appreciate any help and thanks in advance.

Transfer to the PC first, then onto the other drive.

Thanks Dave. My internal drive is pretty much full at the moment but I could easily shift some stuff so I can do it that way.

Why is it that you can't just transfer from one external to the other though?

Just a thought .... are both the external drives NTFS ? .... if the source drive is NTFS and the Destination drive is FAT32, any files larger than 4gb will throw up this message, due to filesize limit on FAT32 drives.

Both drives are NTFS which is why I thought it'd all transfer OK... In the end I just moved it all in smaller chunks of around 30GB. A pain in the butt but job done.

Glad you found a workaround ....... I vaguely remember reading somewhere that there was a memory leak bug in Vista, which also gave the "not enough memory" message, but I cant find the article at the moment ..... if I find it, I'll post back.

You're right, there does seem to be an error with Vista when copying large amounts in one go. Apparently it's also more likely to occur if your AV is Kaspersky which is what I use, so that explains it. I should probably have searched before I posted eh...

There's a hotfix available upon request from ms though so i'll try that and see how it goes..

Good stuff ..... if you locate iot and it works ok, let us know how it goes. I imagine it will get bundled into SP1, when it arrives.

Will do. Still no reply from MS though so maybe I'll wait for SP1...
