Hi, I recently bought an external hard drive to use as backup for my home PC. However when I plug it in via USB it doesn't appear in My Computer so I can't access it. I've checked within Device Manager and it is shown there under Other Devices. I have also tried plugging the hard drive into my work laptop and it is recognised instantly. Both pc and laptop are running Windows XP although only my home pc has SP2 installed. Can anyone help with suggestions as to what I can do to make this drive available on my home pc? Thanks.

Did you try a reboot? Did you try other USB slots?

sounds like it needs drivers, did it come with drivers? What brand is it?

Its meant to be plug n play which is the case on my laptop but not with my home pc, so no drivers required. It didn't come with any drivers.

When I plug it into the laptop it appears as "Initio Toshiba MK3012GAS USB Device". I've tried looking for drivers for this device name but with no luck.

Is it USB 2.0 and you don't have it?

Also try re-installing your USB/Motherboard drivers.

Hi, yes it is USB 2.0 and both pc and laptop have it.
As for reinstalling USB & Motherboard drivers I would need advice on how to do that.

Is the PC branded?

If so what is the make and model?

The pc is a Dell Dimension DIM 2400 Pentium 4.

I've not formatted the disk as the pc can't see it so I can't do anything to it.
