Default external hard-drive problem

my device is installed on my laptop. I get the 'safely remove hardware' promot but the hard drive isn't showing up in my computer.
Is there a problem with the hard drive or the laptop?

Its not listed under My Computer? Silly question but have you tried rebooting the laptop after unplugging the external HD and then plugging drive back in again. Thats worked for me once again when my laptop didn't pick up my old HD.

Hmm erm so its working fine on your PC but not the laptop. What version of Vista are you using? I have Ultimate on my laptop and I haven't had any problems getting it to recognise my external HDD. Could you perhaps do a screenshot of what it says?

OK well if it doesn't install on either it suggests there is likely to be a problem with the hard drive. Did you buy it new?

Default external hard-drive problem

Did the hard drive show up before and then stop showing up? Or has it always been like this? Is the hard drive formatted? Did you get a case and then put a hard drive in it? if its new, its possible this could be the prob. If you right click on the 'My computer` icon on the desktop, then click on 'manage', this should bring up the computer management box. Click on 'disk management' and if its connected it should show up on there. if it needs formatting it will probably say 'unformated' or something like that on the drive, if my memory serves me right. This is based on XP setting, not sure if they have changed it on Vista.

If it needs formatting then there is an option to format in computer management.
