Default External Hard-Drive Problems..Please Help

Last night I disconnected my laptop from my external maxtor onetouch 500gb hard drive. I'm pretty sure i disconnected it properly as well. However, when i plugged my computer back in and booted up i received a warning on my welcome screen telling me that my drive is corrupt and to run chkdsk. I did the hard drive error checking as told and was able to recover the drive, however all the files aren't what they are supposed to be. All my data is in the correct place but they aren't reading properly. For example if I open a a movie a song plays.

I don't want to reformat because i don't want to lose any data. Any help will be appreciated.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2

You have a serious problem.

If you really want the data back then take it to a data recovery shop who will get most of it back.

If not then we can have a go out repairing it but most likely it will not work and will have to be reformatted anyway.

How would i go about repairing it? And what might have caused this problem because the Hard drive is brand new not even 3 months old.
