| My new external hard drive is recognised on my laptop, but comes up with an I/O error when I connect it to my pc. I have a load of music on there, about 30 gb, and need to put it on my PC. My laptop doesn't have enough space on it. I have tried it in different usb slots, but same problem. Have also tried it with linux but no joy there either. Any ideas? |

| Are you able to be more specific on the I/O error? Please tell the exact error message. Elijah ![]() |

| Well it will just keep trying to connect to it, and if I open My Computer it just hangs, then after a while it says The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error |

| Are you running XP on both? If its windows 2000 etc then could be a driver issue. whats the make and model of the hard drive?

| Difficult to say what the prob may be. I have a small LaCie drive and had problems getting it work in some computers. It turned out to be a power issue - the USB port did not seem to be giving the drive enough power. This drive a separate power cable that plugged into another USB port so that it could take extra power (i.e. the drive sometimes needed two USB connections - one for signal and one for power). Does yours have anything like this?

Have you tried the FAQs on the toshiba website (is it a Toshiba external HD or is it a Toshiba in another brands external case? e.g. My external HD is branded Lacie although there is a samsung drive inside) or the FAQ for the company that made the external case if its different. Sometimes there are also forums on the websites where other people have posted similar probs. Worth taking a look I think. My System: The Elephant

| It is a toshiba hard drive in a different case, and yeah it has a split usb cable so it uses 2 slots. I have tried it in all my usb slots but it's the same problem in all of them. |

| If the 2 usbs together dont work then it sounds like your best bet is try the manufacturers website FAQs/forums and see if anyone else has the same prob. Sorry I couldnt be more help.
