Default External HDD game performance

I want to download Microsoft Flight Sim X on my External Hard drive becuase my internal hard drive doesn't have the space required for instalation.
The total space required to download FSX is 15 GB and my Maxtor MXTR2202 has 80GB of free space.

How does an external hard drive compare in performance to an internal hard drive?

Would an external Hard drive be capable of playing such a high end game?

Just to make sure I understand you, you're not downloading the game from the web but trying to transfer the game data to your external, yes?

Connecting via USB? Maybe if it's not something that takes a massive amount of CPU and GPU power to load (because of all the textures). But Flight Sim X is not going to work on an external.

E-SATA? Sure.
