I was sold an incorrect replacement adaptor for my external hard drive (AC/AC!) and when connected it went pop and emitted smoke. Is it likely that I will be able to retreive the files (wedding photo's!!) from the drive and then buy a new one or am I in for a lifetime of trouble???

Take the case apart, there should be a normal IDE drive inside.

Then plug that directly into a desktop PC (internally) and see.

Thanks. Should I take any precautions or is it risk free. DIY is not my forte!

Only precaution is static. Oh, and maybe dropping the HDD....or spilling water on it
