Default Flash memory back-up

Hello, I'm looking to back up my pics, videos, and documents. I realize there is no fail safe method, but from what I can discern, flash memory appears to be more reliable than an external hard drives or burning a CD/DVD. Is this correct? If it is, should I buy, a USB flash memory stick, flash drive, flash card, or are they all the same?

I think a CD would be most reliable for pictures and such. You never know what might go wrong with a flash drive or even a hard drive for that matter.
