Default Hard drive installation, please help me!!

my hard drive went wrong a few days ago its a 400gb s-ata, basically i needed to install xp again on it again, therefore losing everything i have on it, i decided to use a 80gb hard drive and a 250gb external hard drive to sort the mess out. i installed both and then installed the faulty hard drive as a slave drive, so i could transfer all my films music files settings etc to the external hard drive, then re-install xp on the 400gb hdd and make it master and transfer back the files from the external hard drive, if that makes any sense. The problem i have is i cannot access my 400gb hdd through my computer running the 80gb to access my files to transfer them to the external, it says i dont have permission to access, access denied. is there any way of removing the security of the drive to allow access to my old files for transfer? thanks

areee rite i could on mine so i think it should let you...so could be that wot your trying to access is corrupted ..

can you do a search on that harddrive? and maybe put in the search documents or the files name your trying to recover? failing that you could try a softwere that can scan a harddrive and show you your deleted files this software is to recover deleted files ect but it will bring every file pic and video up for you :) you just pick wot you want and save:) i think thats worth a shot if still no look . there is loads of free trial versions out there search recover my files :) hope this helps

You may have already solved this, but I will duplicate the reply given to another for what I judge to be the same.

It is likely that you need Admin permissions to access these files. This thread ( http://www.thecomputerforums.co.uk/f48/access-denied-all-sudden-9897/ ) has info using ‘cacls’ in the command prompt window to give full permissions to your login user name. Start small – pick an expendable file / directory. After gaining confidence, apply it to the whole drive (assumes drive other than the c: drive or other boot drive).
