Hello, first off im very impressed with the site. Its great you can offer this support. My question is i had a sony vaio laptop (pcg-9g1m/ fx805) as usual it died after the warranty but i managed to save the hard drive and i bought a laptop caddy which can just connect to my pc via usb. the problem is i want to retrieve my files on this hard drive but i get a access denied message. I believe it has got something to do with the windows bootup (on my laptop) because it used to prompt me with the windows password option before logging on to my account. but as i am now using this hd drive as a portable extra drive so i do not need to boot windows from my laptop hard drive, i reckon i cant access my files cause the hdd still thinks it is password protected. I cannot boot my laptop now to turn the feature off, is there anything else i can do or am i gonna have to boot windows from my laptop drive disable it and then swap back to my pc windows after. Im at my wits end here so any help is appreciated.
Many thanks in advance
Paul

Does it show up in 'My Computer'?

Can you see any files or folders?

Pass-worded or not you should see the top of the folder trees.

If not it may be faulty, a scan and repair may fix it.

Hi david thanks for the reply. When i plug the drive in now using the caddy. i have the files 'paul rileys documents' and the administrator docs but when i try to access my folder it says im not authorised to access the file but there is no prompt for a password. I had important files in a folder on my desktop which i cannot seem to find?
if i do a scan and repair can i do this using the HD in its caddy and also how do you initiate a scan and repair?
Thanks for your help david

Definitely sounds like they are password protected.

You will need some third party software to get round it, have a Google and I will too.

Will come back to you if I find anything.

thank you wolfey, this is some useful information which i will attempt when i get home. I will keep everyone updated if this works or not, in the mean time if there is anything else i can do please post it here and i will try it. one thing i had forgotton to mention is the folder i am trying to access says it is empty ? does this mean ive lost everything ? also i allowed someone to compress the files on certain folders on this account and it looks as though they have done it to my account and my guest account but not the adminstrators account. If i try this link above and i access it is it worth uncompressing the files?
cheers
