My hard drive has recently started playing up.

What happens is the drive sounds like it "slows down, then stops" for about 30 seconds its a 250gig maxtor 7200rpm,does this sound like it could be my hard drive failing or could it be something eles, friend of mine thinks it could be my memory breaking down that might be causing it to.

any suggestions??

is it clicking? Is it hanging up the system?
Sounds like you should back up everything that's important.

Go to the Maxtor (now Seagate) website and download the diagnostic tool, to check the drive.

Its not clicking,it just slows down, makes a noise when it slows down, its hard to explain the noise it makes.its like a little whistling noise, then it stops, then the screen seems to freeze for about 30 seconds, then you hear the drive start again, the thing is the drive is only about 5 months old.

it doesn't matter how old it is. the manufacturing processes aren't perfect. there are faulty drives out there.

if i were you, test another hard drive and see if it will work with that one. if it does, it's pretty obvious your current drive is dead. i think you might end up getting a new one in the end honestly.

back up your data and wait for it to fail, then send it back.
