Default Harddrive malfunction?

ok so i have a gateway mt 6840 laptop and recently the harddrive stoped working. i thought it had gone bad so i ordered a new one however this brand new hard drive is doing the same thing.

what happens is that in the BIOS the harddrive does shows up yet when i try to install any O/S (either windows XP or Linux Ubuntu) the hard drive simply does not show up.....im stuck and neep help......

Sounds like you have a SATA hard drive, XP needs drivers pre-install.

Alternativelyenter your BIOS and set your hard drive mode to IDE, this will make XP think you have an IDE drive and it will pick it up with no drivers pre-install.

......how do i preinstall drivers?
as for the alternative of setting my hard drive mode to IDE my BIOS wont let me......

You need to goto the makers of your motherboard website and get the drivers.

Then get them onto floppy or CD.

Then when XP install starts it will say hit F6 to install drivers, follow the instructions thereafter.

well ok i figured out the problem and got it fixed point is i hate windows.....
