Default HDD problem - Error when trying to access

Hi I am having problems accessing my HDD's at the moment. Every time I double click on them I get an error message;

Windows cannot find 'RECYCLER\S-5-8-98-100031476-100012249-100014615-7797.com' Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again...

The HDD's are both recognised in BIOS and I can access files by right clicking and going through the Explore option.

Does anyone know what this means? I tried looking it up on google but only found some hits in french which isnt much use.

Also, Im having some troubles on boot up. Sometimes my comp will freeze right after reaching the desktop and I'll have to restart 2 or 3 times to get it working.

Any help would be much obliged,

Thanks in advance

Can you run a checkdisk on them?

Try this at first as it sounds like some files are misplaced but also back up all your data just in case the drives are on there way out

OK, tried to run it through command prompt but it said files were in use. I scheduled for it to run on next boot up, then restarted my machine. It took 3 bootup attempts to actually get me to desktop. I dont know if that actually worked so I tried to do it manually by right clicking the drive and going through properties>tools and check for errors. The following message was displayed after trying to run it on either drives;

Windows was unable to complete the disk check. The message was displayed instantly as if it doesnt run at all. I havew also noticed a strange problem with my internet in that when on google and click on a hit the first time it will open on a completely random site. I had the same problem before but got rid of it with SAS malwarebytes anti malware and AVG but its not working this time. Could it be that I have some kind of virus that is screwing around with my system? If so, can anyone reccommend a good anti virus? Im using AVG, SAS and malwarebytes anti malware but none of them seem to be picking anything up at the moment.

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Please do not run checkdisk, it can help indeed, but also can damage your OS, and file/folder structure. There also could be bad sectors. Best way is to stop using the drive.

Martin.

But the same problem is happening to both of my drives. I built the computer less than a year ago so it isn't old. Checkdisk is reporting that there are some errors when I use it through cmd prompt but it cant continue in read-only mode. Though when I schedule it to run on next bootup it doesnt run. Is there anyone to force it to run without a restart? It says the volume is in use by another process, should I stop all processes through Task manager?

Thanks for the replies so far

There's always at least one process running, so I think no chance to do that (maybe Im wrong, please correct me).
What do you mean, same problem is happening to both drives? Is one of them an OS, and the other one is additional just for data?

That doesn't make much sense, if you just stop using the drive the outcome is the same as if it breaks running checkdisk, you end up with no use of it either way. Odd solution.

Backup the data, then run the checkdisk, if it dies you have lost nothing as it was clearly on it's way out and would of gone anyway in due coarse.

Agree...

Please back up what's vital for you, and then play with your HDD.
I'd suggest, not to use it again.. .

I have a WD Raptor drive as my main with system files and OS on. I ahve a samsung drive as a backup data HDD. They are both displaying the message I wrote in the first post. It's a little strange that BOTH drives would die in exactly the same way at the same time isnt it?
