how difficult is it to replace broken hard drive i know very little about computers thanks for any help

Just make sure Jack that you get the same connection type of hard drive ...
IDE, SATA, SATA2 ectt and that the power connector you get is 4 pin molex or the thin black connector for a sata drive.

i am replacing it with an identical hard drive MAXTOR diamondmax plus 9 120GB ATA/133 HDD so will it just be a stright swap and what will i have to do once i have done that

I wouldn't bother doing an exact replacement. You can get better HDDs than that that will be much faster, even on ATA.

It's very easy, the hardest part is probably getting the screws lined up so it's secure :)

Well, if you have SATA that's your best bet.

If not, any ATA/IDE drive should do - Western Digital makes 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, and 500GB ATA drives which will be much faster.
