It depends on the size of the external hard drive, the speed of both, the cabilaty of the connection, and whole list of other factors.

Depends on the speed of the computer, speed of the hard drive, and speed of the connection. From experience copying files from an internal hard drive to another internal hard drive - it will probably take at least half an hour, but most likely drag out to a couple hours due to the external connection speed limits.

How long is a piece of string? There is no definitive answer to this Q, without a lot more info like method used to transfer, transfer speed of slowesst peripheral, software used, etc. etc...Why would you want to?i.e. is this your C: drive with the OS and your data or is it 20GB of data? if it is your OS (e.g. Win XP etc.) then there is no real need to copy ALL of it just your data. Now if you need to transfer it because you are upgrading to a larger HDD then you need some proper software for the purpose like Norton's GHOST. (Symantec). The short answer is:copy over approx. 100MB of data whilst timing it to get the transfer speed in MB/Second then use simple math to see how long the 20GB will take.
