i NEED to know if this hard drive will last for years to come.

ok well, i haven't been able to find too many reviews on this hard drive. hopefully you guys can find me some. i want a hard drive than will last me for years to come and can withstand not being turned off for 4 months at a time. will this HDD do that for me?

I'd go for a Western Digital but even they can break.

It's not a question anyone can answer CP, there's all sorts of variables that can hinder a hdd. Or not.

Whilst the tech in hdd's is pretty much the same, how it's implemented by add-on software/hardware from each manufacturer obviously has an impact.

Then you've got to take into account the rest of the build, defragging, ambient temps, hdd temps, airflow, electricity, usage. The list goes on.

well, what i meant was one that has a history and a proven low chance of failure. in other words, one that is known to be very reliable.

Seagate has been around for ages, I'd recommend them.

But I'd also recommend Samsung hdd's.....and we all know the trouble you had with one.

There's always drives that fail, despite reviews to the contrary from other owners.

The only brand I have NOT had fail on me is Western Digital.

I have had loads of Seagates go bad.

Obviously this is just my personal experience, but then I do frequent a fair few hard drives.

actually Alex, i had 2 samsung die on me. do you think i should start a poll on which brand is best? meh. even so, i'll leave that for another day.

It's all down to personal choice and experience, the only one I've had fail on me was Western Digital, and I've used Seagate, Samsung and Hitachi, most come with a 3 year warranty anyway, it's just a case of making back ups regularly.

im starting to think it more the model than the maker.

Why?

It's going to be down to luck and how you treat the drive.

I had two seagates go in my personal PC in a row.

I swapped to Western Digital but at the same time added a HD fan.

My new found reliability is probably more to do with the fan than anything else.

Anything that is manufactured, no matter what the field, will have flawed items produced, where one item in the same range might last for years, another might only last weeks or months, of course there are times when a whole model range are poor simply down to poor design and so on.

You pays your money and you takes your channces.
