I have to put a brand new hard drive into my Fujitsu amilio m1425 laptop. Could some one please tell me how to format the new drive and when i turn on the laptop what do i have to do to the bios , do i have to use fdisk if so how, then at what stage do i put on windows xp and how - i am a novice but with some good instructions i know i can do this.

I look forward to your replies.

You should set it up in your bios so that it boot from CD, then when it asks you to press any key to boot from CD the rest is self explanatory really
It will the ask you if you want to format and install new operating system and so on

so what your saying is just put the new dard drive into the laptop and follow the on screen instructions?, will it automatically take me to the bios or do i have to press a button on start up?

you will have to press F8 or maybe DEL to enter your bios at the boot screen, then set it to boot from CD first, that will be under boot order or something similar
