Hello,

Just wondering about my boyfriends desktop (he's taking it to the place he got it as its still under warranty - though I'm not sure if he'll have voided it by breaking it whilst trying to install a new component!).

He tried to install his dads old CD or DVD drive into his system, as far as I know his CD/DVD drive is SATA & his dad's IDE. He put all the leads in, turned on the power and heard a popping noise. He said the system beeps the usual amount of times when power is on, the monitor displays 'no signal' and he thinks his USB ports have gone but this is just because his wireless mouse & keyboard don't work (but they wouldn't if the computer hadn't gone and properly booted up would they?).

Any ideas?

At a guess sounds like he may have connected it wrong and blew the power supply, that would explain the 'pop' sound too.

If it were the PSU, though, wouldn't the computer fail to start up at all? Fans also working.

No, fans don't take a lot of current to run.

Faulty PSUs commonly power the machine on in part. Don't assume that just because you get beeps or fans spin that the PSU is kosha.
