Default Installing an eSata HDD (but not working)

Hello, I have a standard Samsung Spinpoint 500GB HDD that has been installed inside an IcyDock to allow me to connect it via eSata. I have done this because my PC already has 4 HDDs installed internally.

So I configured the BIOS to recognise the drive as an IDE configuration and then boot into Windows Vista 32bit and go to Start>Control Panel>Computer Management>Device Manager. Then I go to the menu and go to Action>Scan for hardware changes. The HDD is picked up but I get an error that 'Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error whilst attempting to install it. JMicron JMB36X Controller. Driver not intended for this platform.'

Is anyone able to help me? Does anyone know the way to resolve this issue so that I may format and use this HDD?

Does the drive show in disc manager?

Right click My Computer > Manage > Disc Management

Hello Dave, unfortunately if it did I would format it (the answer is no).

It wont work because the driver it is looking for is an IDE controller.

Any idea?

Can't edit my post, so I'll start again:

Hello, I have a standard Samsung Spinpoint 500GB HDD that has been installed inside an IcyDock to allow me to connect it via eSata. I have done this because my PC already has 4 HDDs installed internally.

So I configured the BIOS to recognise the drive as an IDE configuration and then boot into Windows Vista 32bit and go to Start>Control Panel>Computer Management>Device Manager. Then I go to the menu and go to Action>Scan for hardware changes. The HDD is detected as a device, but I get a couple of errors that 1. 'Found New Hardware. Windows needs to install driver software for your IDE controller. Locate and install driver software (recommended)' I then proceed to choose this option and then 2. 'Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device. Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error whilst attempting to install it. JMicron JMB36X Controller. Driver not intended for this platform.'

Is anyone able to help me? Does anyone know the way to resolve this issue so that I may format and use this HDD?

I might be wrong here, but I think your bios has to support and be set to AHCI for hot plugging capability and not simply IDE emulation of SATA.

See if your bios supports this or check if a bios update is available .... if not you may be looking at a PCI Controller Card.

Hello there, the unfortunate thing here is that I know this works because at some stage I had it working. I just don't remember what I did differently from that of which I have done now to get it configured! I have three choices in the BIOS. One is IDE, two is RAID and the third is AHCP or something.

When I get past POST, the screen comes up and the hard drive contained within the IcyDock shows up correctly under the JMicron eSata controller. It says 'Press any key to continue...' and then the controller comes up for my internal RAID configuration using the Intel SATA controller before the computer continues to boot into Windows.
