I'm getting ready to put a new 500bg HD in my old clunker. It looks like there is connections already there but in the box I have a blue .

I thought I was ready for this but now I'm confused. Whats the SATA interface cable for?

Perhaps you've got a SATA power cable lying around. Need to connect that interface cable as well to a slot.

I've got the SATA cable, sorry I typed that part wrong, that came in the box with the new HD. I'm trying to figure out where it goes now...

Looks like I might have to take the power supply off to get to it but I'm not sure yet.

Question: The old drive is pretty useless, although I wouldn't mind keeping it in there. But would this be easier for a beginner to just remove it and replace it with the new one?

There should be either a L shaped (long plug with short perpendicular groove) or D shaped plug on the motherboard for it to plug into. They're usually clustered together.

If the old drive is for sure SATA, it would be easier. But if it is, you might as well just follow its cable down to the motherboard, that should alert you to where the SATA data plugs are.

Thanks. I think I'm going to take it to a friends tomorrow and have him guide me. Will be easier then potentially screwing something up
