could anyone give me simple instructions on how to format a new hard drive thnx for any help

Are you going to install it as your main drive, with an OS or is it a Data drive ?

If the latter .... what OS ?

OK .... if it's the main drive, there is no need to pre-format the drive, as this will be taken care of automatically, when you install the Operating System, assuming XP,Vista or W7.
